Lake Erie basin water quality to be discussed at forum
Leading edge conservation practices that will positively impact water quality without negatively affecting the farmer’s economic bottom line will be the featured topic at the Northwest Ohio Ag-Business Breakfast Forum, Thursday, Apr. 20, 2017 from 8 – 9:30 a.m. The event is hosted by the Center for Innovative Food Technology (CIFT) at the Agricultural Incubator Foundation (AIF).
Aaron Heilers, project manager, Blanchard River Watershed Demonstration Farms Network, will talk about how water quality, especially in the western Lake Erie basin, has become a very controversial topic in recent years. Agriculture, and its impact on water quality, continues to be widely discussed. There have been new laws and regulations put in place to try to combat algal blooms in bodies of water around Ohio, and the threat of more government involvement is looming.
The Blanchard River Demonstration Farms Network is a partnership between the Ohio Farm Bureau and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resource Conservation Service. Edge of field monitoring equipment is used to capture scientific data from the farms to accurately gauge the impact conservation practices have on nutrient loss.
