What is the MEP?
As a Strategic Marketing Manager at CIFT, I often encounter questions about the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)—what it is, how it functions, and whether CIFT is the MEP itself. The answer is clear: while CIFT is not the MEP, we are deeply intertwined with both the National MEP Network and the Ohio MEP as their trusted partner.
Through this collaboration, the National MEP sets the foundation, the Ohio MEP implements it for local manufacturers, and CIFT extends specialized services to meet regional needs. Together, we form a dynamic network that empowers manufacturers and food processors across Ohio.
What is the National MEP?
The National Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is a federally funded program administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Its mission is to bolster small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) by providing affordable access to expertise, tools, and resources that foster growth and innovation.
The National MEP Network operates effectively through:
- 51 MEP Centers across all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
- A network of over 1,400 advisors and experts offering practical support.
- A cost-share funding model, blending federal, state, and private contributions.
This unique public-private partnership delivers high-value, accessible services to manufacturers, with proven results. For instance, in FY 2023, the MEP National Network contributed to $4.3 billion in new sales and supported over 28,000 jobs nationwide.
What is the Ohio MEP?
The Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership (Ohio MEP) acts as the localized extension of the National MEP. By tailoring resources to Ohio’s manufacturers, the program ensures businesses across the state have access to the expertise they need to thrive.
The Ohio MEP operates through six regional partners, each dedicated to addressing their region’s specific challenges:
- Central Region: MEP at Columbus State Community College.
- Northeast Region: MAGNET: The Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network.
- Northwest Region: CIFT (That’s us!).
- Southeast Region: OSU South Centers.
- Southwest Region: TechSolve.
- West Region: Fastlane.
Services Offered by Ohio MEP
By taking a localized approach, Ohio MEP provides manufacturers with customized services, including:
