We believe it’s important to know who you’re working with.

We’re continuing our Getting To Know CIFT series with our Program Manager — Industry 4.0, Joseph (Joe) Schultz. Joe enjoys diving head first – working directly with different manufacturers in Ohio. We asked Joe some questions to get a glimpse into his role and what motivates him.

What do you do at CIFT?
I am the Industry 4.0, Program Manager. My job is to connect to all manufacturers in Northwest Ohio to assist with their pain points. This includes Lean/Continuous Improvement (implementation, training, assessments), Smart Manufacturing (Internet of Things (IoT), AI, preventive maintenance), Digital Manufacturing (ERP, digital thread, data capture), Cybersecurity (focus on CMMC), Automation (robotics, Cobots, smart sensors), 3D scans and layout and much more. In addition, I have developed Lean/Continuous improvement for the office for our clients. We often think these practices belong only on the shop floor, but in fact, they can transform their offices as well.

In addition, in my time at CIFT, I have added ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor training, NIST 800-171/CMMC (Executive Controls Training), and Additive Manufacturing for Innovation Design and Production certificates to help better serve our manufacturers. Another aspect of my job is to build relationships with manufacturers and service providers in the Northwest Ohio Region to help them see and know CIFT as an available resource.

What motivates you to wake up and go to work?

The opportunity to make positive change and enhance Northwest Ohio manufactures for future generations and reshape the narrative around manufacturing careers. Furthermore, it contributes to the elevation of manufacturing standards, both in product quality and the professional development of employees.

What are you most looking forward to with this role?
I am most looking forward to honing my skill set and making a lasting impact that will extend to future generations.

What’s one thing you want people to know about your role, service, or CIFT?

I want people to know that Industry 4.0 is not merely a vision for the future, rather it is a current reality. As businesses navigate the changing landscape of workforce shortages, quality controls, or any operational challenge it is time to look into continuous improvement efforts. If a task is dirty, dull, or dangerous, there is a better alternative.

Companies must evaluate their cybersecurity to protect their business, and customers and, in some cases, continue to stay in business especially if they are in the DOD supply chain. Lastly, reach out to us and let us help you build a brighter future in Ohio manufacturing.

I also want people to know that CIFT is here to help and partner with them as their Ohio MEP (Manufacturing Extension Partnership).

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I have a high desire to learn and I seek to continue to add to my tool belt through experience and schooling. I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids. I also may have a slight inclination for coffee and trying new places.
